Rosaleen Duffy is Professor of International Politics. She is a political ecologist and her research focuses on the international politics of wildlife conservation. Her most recent book is Security and Conservation: The Politics of the Illegal Wildlife Trade (Yale University Press, 2022). She has led several large research projects that engage with questions of animal-human relations, including BIOSEC (ERC Advanced Investigator) and Beastly Business (ESRC). In this project Rosaleen will explore the themes of mutualisms and ideas of the nature-cure in human interactions with birds in conservation projects.

The Political Ecology Network POLLEN26 Conference was held in Barcelona 29 June-3 July. It was a close collaboration between the University of Barcelona, Autonomous University of Barcelona and University of Pompeu Fabra.  The lead organiser was Prof Dan Brockington (ICTA-UAB), working collaboratively with the team to deliver the largest and longest POLLEN since its inception at the University of Wageningen in 2016.

Rosaleen chaired the final plenary session in the Museu Maritim in which Prof Felipe Milanez, Dr Elia Apostolopoulou, Prof Farhana Sultana and Prof Christos Zografos shared their reflections on the event. They highlighted the enduring themes of political ecology and the new, exciting directions for the field. The plenary also covered themes of struggle, resistance, hope and love.

Rosaleen also spoke at a panel on applying for European Research Council grants, led by Ines Pio from ERC. The other speakers were Dr George Iordachescu, Prof Dan Brockington and Prof Gregg Mittman.

She attended the launch of the Political Ecology Handbook, put together by Dr Jessica Hope, Dr Elia Apostolopoulou and Dr Adriadne Collins – which was a really fun evening meeting lots of new people and chapter authors
