We are delighted to celebrate the publication of Anthropofugal Fictions: Literature, Species Politics and Flight from Humanity, a new book by our Co-Investigator Professor Robert McKay.

The launch event on 4th June brought together colleagues, researchers, and members of the wider academic community to hear more about the ideas behind the publication and to celebrate this exciting achievement.

An illustrated book cover for Anthropofugal Fictions featuring a surreal, collage-like jungle scene with dense green and yellow foliage, a zebra in the foreground, a giraffe’s head emerging from the upper right, several penguins gathered at the lower right, and a seated human figure reading or writing beside them, all set against a dreamlike background.
‘Anthropofugal Fictions: Literature, Species Politics and Flight from Humanity’ book cover.

Professor Robert McKay has published widely on the politics of species in contemporary literature and film and co-edited several volumes, including Animal Satire (2023) and The Palgrave Handbook of Animals and Literature (2021). He is the co-editor, with Susan McHugh and John Miller, of the book series Palgrave Studies in Animals and Literature.

Published by Edinburgh University Press, the newly released Anthropofugal Fictions reveals how animal rights and species identity are reimagined in literature of the late twentieth century. The book reflects Professor McKay’s longstanding research interests in the representation of animals, species politics and contemporary literature, and connects closely with the Multispecies Mutualism project.

Congratulations on this significant achievement! We look forward to continuing to build on these important conversations through our research activities.
